How to check if someone has logged into your Facebook account

Recently we got this question:

I get two or three notifications daily in my junk mail folder that say someone tried to log in to my Facebook account. …Is there any way to find on my Facebook account if any of these attempts were successful or unsuccessful? – Catherine L

This question is a popular one.  And we have the answers.

Step 1: Is that Facebook email notification a spam email?

Our immediate response was to make sure the emails received weren’t phishing attempts to get you to click a link.  On that note, always be sure to have your antivirus software (more on this here) running in the background just in case you do click on an email and it loads malware onto your computer.

Step 2:  How to check if someone has logged into your Facebook account

1) Login to your account and click on the small arrow in the upper-right corner of the title bar.

2) Select Settings and Privacy > Settings.

  • On a desktop computer, click the down carrot on the top right of your Facebook page to find Settings & Privacy, then tap Settings and select Security and Login from the lefthand menu
  • On a mobile app, click your personal icon  on the bottom right, then the Settings gear icon on the top right part of your screen, scroll down and tap Security and Login

3) Once the Settings page has loaded, find the Security and Login on the left-hand side panel on desktop or scroll down on your mobile device…. and click it.

4) You will now go to a security page. The website will take you to the security page. Note the section 3rd row down: Where you’re logged in

Step 3: How to remove unauthorized devices from your Facebook account

Continuing from the instructions above:

5) Click “See more” or “See all” and you’ll see a list of all the devices and locations which have been authorized to access your Facebook account.

6) If any seem suspicious, click on the three vertical dots at the end of the row that you want to remove.

On a desktop, in the pop-up, you’ll see Not you? or Log Out (on mobile it will say Secure Account or Log out)

  • If you want to remove the device, click Not You? (on desktop) or Secure Account (on mobile) and Facebook will block the device. Facebook will also then walk you through additional steps to make sure your account is secure.
  • If you click Log Out, the device in question will be logged out, but it doesn’t really do anything as that person can just log in again with your username and password.

7) Also, if you scroll down to the bottom of this box, you can click “Log out of all sessions” which will do just that.

Now that you’ve kicked everyone off of your Facebook account, now make sure they don’t come back. Change your password!

Step 4: How to change your Facebook Password

In order to change your password, follow these steps:

Settings and Privacy > Settings > Security and login (left hand panel on desktop or 4th section on mobile) > Login > Change password.

Step 5: How to add even more security to your Facebook account

Speaking of security, be sure to follow these steps to lock up your account further.
