Brussels sprouts Christmas Tree lights up science

Did you ever think Brussels sprouts could bring holiday cheer? Back in 2011, a team of British engineers pulled off an electrifying science experiment, using the natural electrolytes in sprouts to power LEDs on a Christmas tree. While it wasn’t exactly a fragrant success (imagine the smell after a few hours!), it was a quirky and creative reminder of how science can light up our lives in the most unexpected ways.

This holiday season, you don’t need to raid the produce aisle to illuminate your tree. With so many dazzling, energy-efficient options available, upgrading your lights has never been easier—or less smelly. Check out my guide to smart Christmas lights.

What’s the quirkiest holiday tradition or decoration you’ve ever seen? Share your stories in the comments—we’d love to hear them.
