Apple transforms AirPods Pro 2 into low-cost hearing aids

Apple announced a handful of new products during its “It’s Glowtime” event earlier this month. While the iPhone 16 lineup grabbed most of the attention, the most intriguing announcement came from a different product line. The Cupertino-based company revealed that its top-tier earbuds, the AirPods Pro 2, will now double as over-the-counter hearing aids through a software update — a feature that has also received FDA approval.

AirPods become more than just wireless earbuds

During the iPhone 16 event, Apple discussed the new hearing aid capability designed to assist people with mild to moderate hearing loss. At the time, Apple mentioned that the feature was still awaiting FDA approval. However, on September 12, the FDA announced it had cleared the software-based hearing aid technology.

“Hearing loss is a significant public health issue impacting millions of Americans,” the FDA’s Michelle Tarver noted in a statement. “Today’s marketing authorization of an over-the-counter hearing aid software on a widely used consumer audio product is another step that advances the availability, accessibility and acceptability of hearing support for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss.”

The FDA approved AirPods after rigorous testing

The FDA said it cleared Apple’s hearing aid feature after running a clinical study with 118 people in the US who had mild to moderate hearing loss. The study found that users got similar results from the hearing aid software when they “self-fitted” the AirPods, compared to those who had a professional fitting.

“Results also showed comparable performance for tests measuring levels of amplification in the ear canal, as well as a measure of speech understanding in noise. No adverse events related to the device were observed in this study,” the FDA added.

When turned on, this feature uses the results from the Hearing Test to give users a clinical-grade hearing aid experience. It makes real-time adjustments, boosting sounds around them based on their environment. Apple also mentioned that users can set up the Hearing Aid feature with an audiogram provided by a hearing health professional for even more personalized settings.

Behind-the-ear hearing aids can range from $1,000 to $6,000, while the Apple AirPods Pro 2 are priced at just $249.89. That’s a massive difference, and the AirPods even deliver similar results, as noted by the FDA. This is fantastic news for people with hearing issues, as they can now get effective assistance without breaking the bank.

It’s still unclear when Apple will roll out the update to enable the hearing aid feature, but it’s expected to drop sometime this fall. Once available, the feature can be accessed through the settings in iOS 18 when a pair of AirPods Pro 2 are connected. The hearing aid capability will launch in over 100 countries and regions, including the United States, Germany, and Japan.

Now, the FDA has one word of caution. Over-the-counter hearing aids are not a replacement for professional medical evaluations or prescription hearing aids. While OTC hearing aids provide increased accessibility for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss, they have limitations and are not suitable for everyone with hearing impairment. The FDA emphasizes that OTC hearing aids are intended only for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss, not for children or those with more severe hearing loss. For individuals with more significant hearing difficulties or complex hearing needs, prescription hearing aids fitted by hearing health professionals remain the recommended option.

 

AirPods Pro 2 vs. Hearing Aids

While AirPods Pro 2 offer impressive features for those with mild to moderate hearing loss, they still fall short of replacing full-fledged hearing aids for several reasons:

1) Battery life: AirPods Pro 2 last only 4-6 hours when used as hearing aids, compared to prescription hearing aids that can last days or weeks on a single charge. This makes them less practical for all-day use.

2) Customization: Professional hearing aids offer more advanced fine-tuning and personalization to address individual hearing needs. AirPods Pro 2 lack the same level of customization.

3) Severe hearing loss: AirPods Pro 2 are not suitable for individuals with severe hearing loss, who require more powerful amplification and processing.

Hi Carla, you can actually get them now (here). Although, using AirPods 2 while riding a horse might not be the best idea. Some users have reported issues with the AirPods changing songs due to the movement while riding. Additionally, wearing earbuds while riding can be risky as it may block out important sounds around you, such as approaching traffic or other riders. If you still want to listen to music while riding, you might consider using a portable Bluetooth speaker that can clip onto your jacket. This way, you can enjoy your music without compromising your awareness of your surroundings.

I now have expensive hearing aids and air pods. I use the AirPods to listen to music while working in the wood shop and cutting the grass, etc. the noise canceling is astounding. They are more comfortable than my hearing aids and have better connectivity to my iPhone. I will definitely be giving this option a try

My wife now wears hearing aid that cost $4,000 several years ago & I’m probably needing them but not sure I want to spend the money for them. These AirPods through our phones may be the way to go, I’ll be watching

Yes, yes, yes I would definitely use the ear pods at $250 as a hearing aid versus $1000s for a hearing aid. I’ve been to a specialist and been tested for an expensive hearing aid. Turned me off. Been hounded ever since to buy. I’ve been waiting for this for years. Thank you Apple.

Yes, absolutely I would I had a hearing test by an audiologist last year and was told I had moderate hearing loss, however I cannot afford $6,000 for traditional hearing aids

My husband has 2 sets of hearing aides. 1 custom in-ear mold and the other over the ear. Neither work well. Especially in a group, restaurant, out of doors. Both are uncomfortable with the in-ear molds leading to frequent ear canal infections. I think I might buy these when they are available to see if they can help him.

I love the sound of Apple earbuds but the one design feature doesn’t allow them to stay in my ears. This must be considered. All ear openings are different.

Hi Michael. The AirPods Pro 2, are compatible with both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16. The key requirement is that your iPhone should be running iOS 18 or later to access the new hearing aid features.

I have installed ISO18 and hopefully I can figure out how to make my AirBud Pro 2 work as a hearing aid. I have mid hearing loss but refused to get hearing aid, however I wear my AirBuds all day long, so it will be great to use them as a hearing aid.

This is a fabulous addition to the hearing options. My husband needs them but I feel vanity holds him back. If it looks like earbuds for his telephone then he may be more open to getting them. The cost has been a real roadblock too. These are more affordable and make a truely great option that’s affordable.

Just a question for you. I have an Air Pod Pro that I have had for a while. I tried to recharge the battery a couple times but I'm getting nothing, zero. The battery is fully discharged and there is no light. Is there any way to resurrect them? Thanks. I'm a big fan and subscribe to email posts. Keep up the good work.

Hi Jim, here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot and potentially fix the issue: 1) Check the Charging Cable and Adapter: Ensure that the Lightning to USB cable is firmly plugged into the charging case and the USB power adapter. Also, make sure the power adapter is correctly plugged into a power outlet. 2) Clean the Charging Contacts: Sometimes, dirt or debris can prevent proper charging. Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to clean the metal contacts inside the case and on the AirPods themselves. 3) Reset Your AirPods Pro: Press and hold the button on the back of the charging case until the light flashes amber, then white. This will reset your AirPods and might resolve the charging issue. 4) Try a Different Charging Method: If you have a wireless charging case, try using a Qi-compatible charger. Place the case with the status light facing up and ensure it is properly positioned on the charger. 4) Leave Them to Charge Overnight: Sometimes, leaving the AirPods in the case to charge overnight can help revive a fully discharged battery. If none of these steps work, it might be time to contact Apple Support for further assistance. They can help diagnose the issue and provide repair or replacement options if necessary.

Absolutely. My hearing difficulty is with the lower sounds. I have been tested, and my ENT said just to tell friends and family to speak up, as Medicare does not cover hearing aids. Even OTC hearing aids cost over $1,000.

I work in an OR and do orthopedics. I have to wear helmet with a fan in it . It is very difficult to hear the surgeon at times especially when saws or drills are being used. I am excited about this new technology and am willing to give it a try .

These features are designed to help users with mild to moderate hearing loss. the upgrade is specifically for the AirPods Pro 2, not the iPhone. However, to fully utilize these new features, you will need a compatible iPhone or iPad. The AirPods Pro 2 are compatible with a wide range of iPhone models, including the iPhone 6s and later. So, you don't necessarily need the latest iPhone to make them work properly.

I'm already using my AirPods Pro 2 as hearing aids. There are various settings that you have to drill down to. There are how-to videos on YouTube. They work pretty well. But they're too uncomfortable to wear all day. And, of course, they fall out sometimes. I'm not sure how much the hearing aid update will add to the feature as it currently works.

My input, I wear a Cochlear implant on the left side, it is great for my serious hearing loss. However here is a little twist to this. Being on a Mono hearing processor (cost and age - 81) I have NO directional hearing, I can hear a sound but cannot tell where it's coming from. Since I got a 16+ to control my Cochlear processor anyway I saw your show on Fox and wondered if the AirPods Pro 2 would work for me on a phone call because the Cochlear and my phone are not friends. I hear the noise loud and not clear. When someone is speaking to me I do just fine so I thought that my residual hearing might be enough to help with my phone usage ((I am still very active)) and I was correct, they did help, however what I also found out that even though it is faint, having both AirPods in has helped my directional hearing, I wear them in addition to my implant until the battery flops. Very disappointed with the battery life as I like the set up for the cost and they are "Much" clearer for phone calls that my cochlear. .Yes I know that I can get another hearing aid for my right ear at a price of almost $4,000.00, not in the budget of someone on SSI because then you have the price of an audiologist on top of the hearing aid. Kurt, love your show and emails -when I have time to read them but I always scan them. They are NOT good for my level of hearing loss BUT as a fill in to help me understand the spoken word on my phone and give me some directional hearing, they are a winner. Thank you and God Bless

I purchased the Air Pod 2 a week ago and updated my iPhone to ios18 yesterday. When I set up the hearing aid function, I started to get a chirp every 20 - 30 seconds. I did some research which said to "forget the device" and re-connect. I did that but still have the chirp. I saw others are having the same problem. Any thoughts, Kurt?
