Mr. Kurt, having worked in hotels & being the one handling the credit card transactions & daily batch reports, I’ve preached to guests (and friends) to never use a debit card for purchases. 1. In most cases, bank’s post an authorization for the purchase & isn’t released for 7-10 working days, meaning about 2 weeks. It’s telling the merchant the user has the funds available at that point to cover the purchase. If not, the card is declined. Most merchants post their CC transactions daily but don’t have to. But to the customer, it appears in the leger, the merchant has charged them twice, identical amounts. I had a guest call 911 to report I was stealing their money. 2. Debit cards are a direct link to the checking account, “your” money. I’ve had a girlfriend’s account cleaned out for $3700.00. She was a Temu junkie. Massive headaches to get the bank to make her whole. Where as a credit card is the bank’s money. I believe the card holder is responsible for only 50 bucks unless that has changed. Authorizations is how the banks get you for overdraft fees too.
