Apple just announced the launch of four new iPhone 14 models at their recent “Far Out” Launch Event and Kurt was there to get the scoop.
What new iPhone models were announced?
Apple introduced four new phones:

- iPhone 14 (6.1 inches)
- iPhone 14 Plus (6.7 inches) <– new bigger display in the non-pro category
- iPhone 14 Pro (6.1 inches)
- iPhone 14 Pro Max (6.7 inches)
Right-sized 6.1″ iPhone 14 and the huge 6.7″ iPhone 14 Plus
The new iPhone 14 smartphones introduce the A15 bionic chip which promises privacy, efficiency, and security. The 14 and 14 Plus have a 5-core GPU which is 8 times faster than the previous version (better for gaming), a 6-core CPU, and a 16-core neural engine. Apple is promising these phones to be faster their competition when it comes to smartphones, along with a brand new camera system thanks to their image signal processor.
New camera on iPhone 14
- 12 mp Main camera
- Larger sensor and larger pixels
- 1.5 aperture which is faster
- 49% improvement in lowlight capture
- Night mode exposure is 2 times as fast as the past iPhones means are gonna’ look fabulous in the dark
- Front camera is higher quality for videos and selfies with TrueDepth
- Front camera has 1.9 aperture and 38% improvement in low light
- Front camera has autofocus for the first time
- True Tone flash is 10% brighter
- Supports Dolby Vision HDR
Action Mode on iPhone 14 lets you shake all you want and still get a steady shot
Use iPhone 14’s Action Mode when shooting video for a stabilized look. This eliminates the need for a gimbal or stabilizer in many cases which makes the iPhone’s camera pretty powerful technology
iPhone 14 digital SIM CARD says buh-bye to the SIM card slot and tray
Apple introduced eSIM which is a digital SIM card so you no longer need a physical one in your phone. With eSIM you can quickly transfer plans or get a new one digitally. You can also store multiple eSIMS on one device which is huge for people who have both a work and personal phone.
eSIM promises to be more secure because no one can remove it from your phone. If your phone gets lost or stolen, there’s no physical SIM card to take out to make the iPhone “new” again.
‘Crash detection’ on iPhone 14 automatically sends help in an accident
Apple introduced two new life-saving tools during this launch, both of which work on the new iPhone 14. The first is Crash Detection, which allows your phone to feel G-force measurements of up to 256Gs thanks to a high-dynamic range gyroscope. If your phone detects you’ve been in a car crash, it can contact emergency services for you even if you’re unable to reach it or you’re unconscious.
Emergency SOS via Satellite sends out a distress call without a cell signal or wifi
If you’re ever in an emergency where you’re too far out of reach from cell service contact help, this new feature will absolutely save you. Instead of reaching for a cell tower, your iPhone will search for a nearby satellite, even one flying 15,000 miles per hour if you have a clear view of the sky, to provide connectivity. Your iPhone will show you on the screen where to point your phone to get a connection and will send automated text messages so you can choose to get help as quickly as possible. It also works for the Find My app so friends and family can receive your location via satellite.
What colors does iPhone 14 come in?
iPhone 14 and 14 Plus will come in 5 colors: midnight, blue, starlight, purple, and (PRODUCT)RED. Purple is the newest fresh pick.

Always-On display on iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max
I’m going to have to get used to this thinking it’s draining my battery. You’ll never need to tap the home screen of your iPhone again to check the time or if you have a missed alert. iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max introduce the Always-On display screen, which won’t take away from your battery, but will let you see your phone’s key information with just a glance. Along with the Apple silicon chip, they’ve figured out how to lower the screen refresh rate so low that it barely uses power. Now that’s what I call progress.
New brighter display screen on iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max
The new iPhone Pro and Pro Max display have an all-new display screen that reaches 1600 nits indoors, and gets twice as bright as the iPhone 13 outdoors, reaching up to 2000 nits.
The new display also includes a new lock screen which is customizable for the first time thanks to iOS 16 and comes with widgets and a new way to see live activities.
iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max camera system on steroids at a record 48 Megapixels
- First ever 48MP Main camera set on iPhone
- 65% larger sensor and 2x improvement over iPhone 13 Pro in low-light

Action Mode on iPhone 14 makes shaky shots look smooth
Like the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, the Pro and Pro Max offer the new Action Mode which lets you film stable footage, also including updates to cinematic mode.
‘Dynamic Island’ (don’t laugh, it’s really the name of something you’ll want to remember)
This is a new feature that changes the way the little black rounded box surrounding your iPhone’s front-camera works. Instead of receiving notifications that block your screen, the Dynamic Island interacts so you can always keep an eye on notifications (including your common phone notifications plus features like sports scores or a timer) without obstructing the view of everything else on your screen.
What is the battery life on iPhone Pro and iPhone Pro Max?
iPhone 14 Pro Max wins the longest battery life at up to 29 hours of video playback. The smaller iPhone 14 Pro gets up to 23 hours using it the same way. Apple promises “all-day battery life” thanks to the A16 Bionic chip which makes this the fastest chip ever in a smartphone. What that really means is you can expect at least an hour longer battery life on iPhone 14 compared with previous iPhone 13 models.
