Don’t panic. Here’s how to find your photos after the iOS 18 update

If you’ve recently updated to iOS 18 and found yourself lost in the new Photos app, you’re not alone. We received an email from Dagmar, who was very frustrated because she couldn’t locate her carefully curated photo categories. She wrote to us saying,

I HATE the new photo display on the new iOS 18 update for my iPhone. I cannot find my individual library anymore, i.e., my dog photos, photos of my home, etc. I spent all this time putting them in categories, and now they are gone. Are there instructions somewhere on how to learn this new format, please?

Don’t worry, Dagmar. We’ve got you covered with this handy guide to help you make sense of the new layout.

Kurt’s key takeaways

While the new iOS 18 Photos app might take some getting used to, it offers powerful organization tools and fun features like automatic movie creation. The key is to spend some time customizing the layout to suit your preferences. Remember, your carefully curated albums are still there – they’re just tucked away in the Albums collection. Don’t be afraid to explore and experiment with the new layout. Before long, you might find that this new organization system helps you rediscover forgotten memories and enjoy your photo collection in new ways.

Tons of photos are missing from my people albums. It’s mixed up albums and I don’t know how to revive it he photos and put in right albums. Apple for all its hype has a horrible photo app
Kurt Knutsson November 18, 2024 - 5:31 pm
Hi Kathy, here are some steps you can take to try and recover and organize your photos: 1) Check the Albums Section: Open the Photos app and go to the Albums section. Browse through all your albums, including Shared and Activity, to see if your missing photos are there. 2) Recently Deleted Folder: Check the Recently Deleted folder in the Utilities section. It stores deleted items for 30 days before permanently removing them. You can recover any photos that might have been accidentally deleted. 3) Hidden Photos: Check if some of your photos were moved to the Hidden folder. Go to Photos, scroll down to the Utilities section, tap Hidden, and use Face ID to unlock it. You can unhide any photos that were moved there. 4) Sync Photos with iCloud: Ensure that your photo library is synced with iCloud. Go to Settings > [your Apple ID name] > iCloud > Photos, and toggle on Sync this iPhone. Tap Sync Now to update the album metadata across your devices. 5) Use the Search Bar: If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or later, use the AI-driven search bar in the Photos app to find specific photos by people, places, or events. These steps should help you locate and organize your missing photos. If you continue to experience issues, you might want to reach out to Apple Support for further assistance.

This photo album upgrade is atrocious! How can I get the old view back?
Margie F. November 27, 2024 - 6:53 am
I have 350 albums I’ve created and placed photos into over the past 15 years. As I take more photos, I put them into the albums. This new, stupid update will NOT allow me to search for an album by name. To manually search through 350 albums to find the one I am looking for is ridiculous. I use these both for personal and professional purposes and I am extremely upset with this update. They need to add a search function under the albums heading.

Me too! I hate the new update :(
Jamie W December 2, 2024 - 10:58 am
AMEN TO ALL WHO HATE THIS UPDATE THAT HAS "LOST" MANY OF MY ALBUMS--INCLUDING MY FAVORITES FOLDERS! My 100,000 photos were already easily searchable and findable! FIX IT BACK!
Diane A. December 12, 2024 - 11:59 am
I hate the new update…cannot enjoy my photos any more. How can I go back to the old system?
Andrea De November 30, 2024 - 8:48 am
What happened to the Places feature? The easiest way to find a certain photo from one’s travels is to zoom in on the map. Did they just eliminate it?😩
Janet S. December 2, 2024 - 6:53 am
I hate this new photo update. It WAS sooooo simple. I send Good Morning and Good Night gifs… using the search for that particular day.. Easy peasy. NOT NOW!! Why do you have to change a good thing…
Rebekah W December 2, 2024 - 4:22 pm
I cannot get my folders to open. I was able to create an album then create folders inside that album to further categorize my photos. With the new update my albums and the folders inside the albums will not open and my photos freeze up. I have to close the entire app and re-open. I also do not like the new update.
Teresa M. December 2, 2024 - 6:57 pm
I agree with the above. Had all my albums organized and they showed next to my “recent” photos. Do not like scrolling all the way down to find them. While scrolling down there is lots of stuff i don’t need. I want the old version back. Wish I had not updated !!
Holly H December 10, 2024 - 6:45 am
Definitely feel the same!!
Jean December 3, 2024 - 8:51 am
PLEASE give us the old Photos back. This is confusing and just basically horrible to use. Apple seems to change thin*s just for the sake of changing them. Give us the option to keep the system we’re used to.
Ruth December 5, 2024 - 6:45 am
I’ve only ever had an Apple iPhone, there has always been “something” I’ve disliked about their UPDATES, but this photo update I Hate!!! Why would Apple make something harder and totally ridiculous? It was easy to navigate photos, edits, albums before, now I can’t even do a simple edit!! If it doesn’t get changed back and quickly, it may be time to move on and try another phone!! I don’t care how “sleek” it looks!!! Maybe you should try asking your customers what they think before you totally screw something up. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”!!! Words to live by!!! VERY DISSATISFIED customer
James E December 6, 2024 - 3:14 am
Why does Apple insist on fixing things that aren’t broken. I’ve spent hours searching for albums and still haven’t found them even with above direction.
E Ching December 6, 2024 - 4:22 pm
Is there a way to sort the photos by dates in the hidden album? It’s possible in the other albums. (iOS 18)
Kurt Knutsson December 6, 2024 - 5:30 pm
To sort photos by dates in the hidden album on iOS 18, open the Photos app on your iPhone or iPad, go to the Hidden album, and tap the Sort button (usually represented by an up-down arrow icon) at the bottom left of the screen. Choose Sort by Date Captured or Sort by Recently Added to organize your photos by date. This way, you can easily manage and view your hidden photos in chronological order.
Hannah December 6, 2024 - 5:17 pm
I hate this update. My hidden photos keep appearing as wallpaper suggestions. There is a reason I have certain photos hidden on my phone!
Mountain Man December 7, 2024 - 6:28 pm
I can't stand this new update for Photos. I'm sorry I updated my software. I cannot delete photos and then permanently remove them from the Recently Deleted folder. They keep coming back. I'll think twice before I upgrade again. Apple sucks!
Chris C. December 8, 2024 - 4:31 am
Same as others. Utterly stupid, struggling with an overly complex Photo app that has been forced on me. I am now going disable Photo app and reload my thousands of photo into an external app which allows me to put MY photos wher I want them and not where apple thinks I shoiuld put them. This is the first time for a while that I am seriuoslyy considering going back to windows
Rosemarie December 8, 2024 - 11:37 am
I agree with all previous comments. I, too, have lost half my albums! I know they still exist because I still have the old photo format on my MacPro laptop and have all my photos and albums as they were..I have not updated the laptop and I don't think I will!
Chris December 9, 2024 - 7:15 am
OK I have now fixed this at least for me. Conecct you phone to you windows laptop or windows PC with a usb/ lightning cable start Windows Photo. Click import photos from connected devcie 10 minutes later you have ALL you pictures readily accesible print edit move catalogue how YOU want them not how apple thinks you wnat theme
Wesley W. December 11, 2024 - 3:45 pm
Does the Apple development team read this? Do they even care? This new upgrade to 18.1.1 on the photos is a total Charlie Foxtrot! Y’all really did it this time!
Wazman W December 19, 2024 - 3:27 pm
Jumping on the "me too" wagon! When I am in the main view, select a "month" to see pics for that month, it shows all those pics for that month fine. But when you tap on it to see them it drops you back into the "All" view??!!!! What the hell? I am selecting to view a MONTH -- show me just that MONTH like it used to!
Ed K. December 19, 2024 - 4:24 pm
Apple needs to rethink what they randomly do to people and their treasured photos. Not every digital gadget works!
Beverly December 20, 2024 - 3:45 am
I’m disgusted by this idea that someone else is gonna organize my photo album!…not only that but this morning this loud music came blaring from somewhere in my iPad and I was appalled to realize it’s in my Photos app! I can’t stand the stupid music people put with their little Facebook videos, etc. and now I’ve got it from MY photos and then sometimes I click on the photo and it takes me through a little slideshow. I don’t want a slideshow I want to look at the photo I just took. Not only that, but I take a photo and I wanna look at it and I can’t find it I mean when I take a little photo with my iPad I can’t find it to dig through all sorts of photos just to find the one I just snapped on my iPad. It’s so frustrating. I’m ready to throw this brand new iPad Air that I just got last week like I’m ready to throw across the room like a frisbee. Thanks for letting me rant.
