Blue light makes you age: How to turn down the blue light on your devices

Have you ever gotten a headache from staring at a computer or TV screen for too long? This may be because of the blue light exposure from the various screens we look at all-day, which may cause eye damage. While scientific research on the long-term damage isn’t yet clear, if you stare at blue light screens too long you may experience symptoms such as blurry vision or dry eyes.

But what if we told you that blue light may make you age faster? According to a recent study done using blue light on flies, chronic blue light exposure can lead to premature aging. Blue light may have subtle effects on cells like your skin or subcutaneous fat.

We have the solutions to help turn down the blue light on the screens you use every day so you can continue using and watching your devices without causing aging or harm to your eyes.

  • Swipe to reveal your app screen
  • Go to Settings
  • Tap Display
  • Toggle on the switch next to blue light filter

Some Android devices may allow you to set a schedule for your blue or night lighting. If you want the display to always be warmer to help eliminate blue light, just make the schedule so it’s always on (IE starts 12:00 AM and ends 11:59pm).

  • Go to Settings
  • Tap Display & Brightness
  • Tap Night shift
  • First adjust the Color Temperature setting using the slider. Opt for a more warm setting to help filter out blue light
  • You can now schedule the setting either by picking evening and morning hours or having a warmer display all day and night by making the time 12:00 AM to 11:59 PM

You can also manually enable this setting to stay on until the following day.

  • Click Apps
  • Tap Settings
  • Scroll and tap Display
  • Toggle on blue light filter
  • If you click blue light filter after turning it on, you can change the opacity. Turning it up higher will give your screen a more yellow tint (your eyes adjust to it and it won’t look so yellow after a little while)
  • Choose a sunset-sunrise schedule or create a custom one

These steps are the same for all Galaxy devices.

  • Go to Quick Settings at the bottom right and select the time
  • Select Settings
  • Under the “Device” section, select Displays
  • Under “Night Light,” toggle on Night Light
  • Under “Color temperature,” adjust the color

Pick a warmer temperature to help eliminate blue light. You can also set a schedule so your screen’s temperature changes only at night and in the morning.

  • Open System Preferences (you can quickly get there if you click the Apple menu button on the top left of your screen)
  • Click Displays
  • Click Night shift
  • Check the box next to Turn on manually and you’ll now have your blue light turned down until tomorrow
  • You can also click Off next to Schedule and either select sunset to sunrise or create your own custom schedule

  • Select Start and enter Settings in the search box
  • Tap System
  • Tap Display
  • Tap Night light
  • Use the slider to adjust how much blue light you want to eliminate
  • Toggle Schedule night light on and either select sunrise through sunset or create a custom schedule

  • Go to your Apps screen and tap Settings
  • Tap Display
  • Tap blue light filter and toggle on the switch to activate it
  • Drag the opacity bar to change how warm you want to make it and how much blue light you want to eliminate
  • Set a schedule to apply the blue light filter

  • Press the Menu button on your remote control
  • Use the left and right arrow keys to get to Picture
  • Use the up and down arrow keys to highlight Color Tempertature
  • Select Warm to emit less blue light

  • Press the Smart or Home button on your remote control
  • Select Settings
  • Select Picture
  • Go to Picture mode and adjust the settings so your TV has a warmer display

  • Press the Home button and use left and right arrows on your remote to get to Settings
  • Use the up and down arrows to select Display
  • Use the up and down arrows to select Picture
  • You can adjust the color, hue, and color temperature of your TV
  • Select one of the warm color temperatures to get rid of blueish tints

  • Go to the Menu
  • Select Picture mode
  • Use the up and down arrows to select Color Temperature
  • Select warm to get less blue tones

While you can turn down the settings on all of your devices, you still want to protect your eyes. You can purchase a pair of blue light glasses to wear while working on your computer or watching TV for long periods of time. You can also put a blue light filter screen on your TV or computer so you don’t have to adjust your settings and blue light will always be filtered out.

I turned down the blue on my clock-radio display by remembering my experience with black and white photography 60 years ago. The way to darken skies for more contrast was to use a yellow filter, such as Wratten K-2. I got a sheet of flexible transparent yellow plastic at an art supply store and cut a small piece to tape on the clock-radio. Perfect, easy, and cheap ($5 or so).
