Blue light makes you age: How to turn down the blue light on your devices

Decrease eye strain and follow these steps to adjust blue light settings on your smartphone, tablet, computer, or even TV

by Kurt Knutsson

Have you ever gotten a headache from staring at a computer or TV screen for too long? This may be because of the blue light exposure from the various screens we look at all-day, which may cause eye damage. While scientific research on the long-term damage isn’t yet clear, if you stare at blue light screens too long you may experience symptoms such as blurry vision or dry eyes.

But what if we told you that blue light may make you age faster? According to a recent study done using blue light on flies, chronic blue light exposure can lead to premature aging. Blue light may have subtle effects on cells like your skin or subcutaneous fat.

We have the solutions to help turn down the blue light on the screens you use every day so you can continue using and watching your devices without causing aging or harm to your eyes.

How to turn down blue light

Smartphones

How to turn down blue light on Android

  • Swipe to reveal your app screen
  • Go to Settings
  • Tap Display
  • Look for an option that says, Night Light, Blue Light filter, or Eye Comfort Shield.

Some Android devices may allow you to set a schedule for your blue or night lighting. If you want the display to always be warmer to help eliminate blue light, just make the schedule so it’s always on (IE starts 12:00 AM and ends 11:59pm).

  • Go to Settings
  • Tap Display & Brightness
  • Tap Night shift
  • First adjust the Color Temperature setting using the slider. Opt for a more warm setting to help filter out blue light
  • You can now schedule the setting either by picking evening and morning hours or having a warmer display all day and night by making the time 12:00 AM to 11:59 PM

You can also manually enable this setting to stay on until the following day.

Tablets

These steps are the same for all Galaxy devices.

I turned down the blue on my clock-radio display by remembering my experience with black and white photography 60 years ago. The way to darken skies for more contrast was to use a yellow filter, such as Wratten K-2.

I got a sheet of flexible transparent yellow plastic at an art supply store and cut a small piece to tape on the clock-radio. Perfect, easy, and cheap ($5 or so).
