When you think of a tractor-trailer truck, you might picture a huge rig chugging down the highway with a cloud of diesel exhaust trailing behind. But Tesla’s Semi is changing that story and rewriting the rules of the road. It’s an electric truck that is revolutionizing the trucking industry and leaving its diesel rivals in the dust.

The Tesla Semi by the numbers

The Tesla Semi is not your ordinary big rig. It is a beast that can outperform any diesel truck on the road. It can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 20 seconds, fully loaded, and maintain highway-level speeds even up steep grades.

It can also travel up to approximately 500 miles on a single charge, and recover up to 70 percent of range in 30 minutes using Tesla’s Semi Chargers. It runs on 3 independent motors on rear axles.

If I ever saw a driver accelerating like that with my cargo (I actually am in Logistics Management so this isn’t entirely hypothetical) I would prohibit use of that CARRIER going forward. Semitrucks are not cars and an ‘impressive’ metric for one (0-60 time) is actually a bad thing.

Center seating position is a problem. Many long haul trucks are team drivers requiring trucks to have an up front passenger seat. Also stopping to charge every 500 miles to get 70% charge is also problem many trucks run 7000 miles a week. Charging availability is also issue must role out hundred of thousands charging stations. Many trucks run in Canada also we have seen issues with cold weather charging this is huge issue. I get it electric trucks are coming but let’s not put the cart in front of the horse.

OMG what a tool.

Take ANY electric vehicle/Truck and go fast up a hill and watch your range SUFFER massively.

The Tesla semi that went 500 miles on a single charge went up hills slower than most trucks, so going up a hill fast is a joke.

If someone talks about a Tesla anything and says Quick, Fast Etc: they are just hyping it.

A semi is designed to haul large weight over vast expanses unless it is a medium freight hauler that goes small distances.

If Tesla or any other manufacture wants to succeed in the trucking industry with a electric truck they better increase the range. 500 miles is NOT enough range. It is not uncommon for drivers to travel 600 + miles in a day. With full tanks my truck has a range of 1100+/- miles. So what is the range of Tesla’s truck when it’s grossing 75000 lbs+ pounds and its 15 degrees outside????? Tesla’s truck is not ready for prime time in my humble opinion.
