The current Apple operating system is called “Monterey”. To find out if your older Mac is able to update, click the Apple menu in the upper left-hand corner, and choose About this Mac. On the following screen, you’ll see the model of your desktop or laptop.
If you don’t get a prompt to update to the latest version of MacOS, this means your computer and its internal hardware is probably no longer supported by important updates. If your Mac is older than 7 years, Apple will no longer offer service and support.
Is my Mac secure if I can’t update the software?
The short answer is no, it’s not protected.
If you’re using an operating system that is older (i.e. Mojave), typically you’ll get updates for a few years after.
However, when you’re not getting any security updates, your Mac is not protected. If it does not connect to the internet, you will be fine, but if you are reading this on an old mac now, chances are a hacker can take advantage of numerous security holes that will act as a welcome mat to trouble.
